Catalan Referendum 5 Days On: Brinksmanship Continues and Another Face Off Likely On Monday
Since last Sunday’s Referendum, relations between Catalonia and Spain have got significantly worse. The General Strike against police brutality and in favour of independence was followed by an interview by Carles Puigdemont on the BBC, in which he stated the Catalan desire to hold an agreed referendum and achieve independence and the following day hotels in coastal resorts of Calella and Pineda began ejecting Policia Nacional and Civil Guards. The King’s statements citing the “inadmissible disloyalty” of the Catalan government and PM Mariano Rajoy’s statement saying he wasn’t willing to negotiate didn’t help matters. Yesyerday (Friday) the Spanish Constitutional Court prohibited a proposed plenary session in the Catalan Parliament on Monday so things could get even worse over the weekend.
