Catalan Referendum Update: Why I Think The Independence Vote Will Go Ahead
The referendum on Catalan independence is planned to take place on Sunday October 1st with the Catalans and the Spanish at loggerheads. The Spanish think the referendum is unconstitutional and therefore illegal and will use force to stop it if necessary. However, they don’t have enough National Police and Civil Guard to close down the polling stations without the help of the Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra. The regular working people who support the Catalan National Assembly are planning to occupy the polling stations this weekend. When push comes to shove, I don’t think the Mossos will be prepared to arrest their grandma’s best friend, the bloke who runs their local bar or the girl who looks after their kids at nursery.
